![]() Thank goodness this is the last week of genius hour. I love to paint and draw but I will be glad when I don't have to do it, only when I want to. This week for genius hour I am going to work on my slides/presentation. I am also going to be planning out how I am going to display my work and my progress. I am freaking out because I have so much freaking work to do. I kinda just want to draw. For some reason, after these twelve weeks I find that I enjoy drawing and that it helps me calm down and not focus so much about all the work I have to finish for school. I deiced that I should just go ahead and draw something this week. I am think about drawing horses because they are one of my favorite animals. I decided on the four from the apocalypse. One red, white, black, and pale. I wanted do this ones because they are meaningful and symbolize something more than just a horse. I also have been working on presenting my slides to my sister so when I actually have to present I will be ready. I am just glad I didn't decide to learn how to sing or play an instrument because I wouldn't be able to do that in front of people. I think I will bring some of my artwork with me to the presentation. I think it will help. I have not decided which one's I will bring yet, but I will figure it out eventually.

![]() This week for Genius I decided to do something a little different. I worked with pastels. Pastels are kinda of like drawing with chalk but it spreads really easy. I have worked with pastels before but I never really actually tried to do a good job when using them. I decided to draw a humming bird with some flowers. I didn't watch a tutorial to do this drawing so that's an improvement. It was definitely more challenging to draw something when you don't have someone showing you how to do it step by step. I didn't even look at a picture while drawing them. I just came up with an idea of what I wanted them to look like and went with it. I don't recommend this method if you are more worried about how it will look when you are finished instead of how relaxing the process can be. You also mess up more than usual but I think you have more fun just experimenting and not stressing about the end result. I started the humming bird picture by printing out the reference photo of the humming bird. I looked at a couple of flowers just for inspiration. A got all of my supplies ready for drawing the picture. I drew the flowers first going up on the right side of the page. I drew them out in pencil first and then went over it in pastel. I colored the red and pink. I learned that pastels blend beautifully and it is pretty easy to add shadows and highlights. After I finished the flowers I moved on to the humming bird. This was the most difficult part of the drawing. It didn't turn out as good as the flowers but I still like. I am also very thankful that I printed out a reference photo. If I didn't have that my picture would have looked a little wonky. I colored the background with green, yellow, blue, and dark green together. I would recommend using pastels because they blend really well. ![]() This week for genius hour I painted a really cute baby pig that has flowers in his mouth and beside of him. I think this painting is adorable. I will try to sell it on Etsy and I am excited to see if it will sell. I don't know how much I am going to sell it for yet. I am thinking like 15 bucks. The painting process took me about two hours if you add in the amount of time it took me to draw out the pig. I used the same creator who did the last tutorial that I watched. I like how she talks me through the painting process and keeps it as easy as possible. I started by drawing the pig. I messed that part up a bit because they pig ears was supposed to reach the edge of painting but mine didn't. It was like the pig's body was too long. I decided that I was not going to re-draw the whole thing, so the painting is a little of center. It turned out OK in the end. I then painted the background blue and white. After that I painted the pig light pink. I add some shading to the pig and them his eyes, snout and differentiated the inside section of the ear from the outside of the ear. I add some highlights and shadows. Lastly I painted the flowers that grow beside the pig and one that is in the pigs mouth. My sister and her fiance bought me some more paint. They are the ones that wan't me to set up an Etsy account. I couldn't set one up by myself because I am not eighteen yet. They bought me a little stand, lots of paint, canvases, and much needed new brushes. I have around a total of 15 canvases, so I don't need no more of those. I will post a picture of the pig in my gallery. ![]() This week for genius hour I painted a sunflower on tin. It didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, which was great. This painting only took me about an hour. I don't know if it was because it was just a really easy painting, or I am just getting the hang of painting sunflowers. In order to start painting on the tin, I had my dad fix the edges of it so I couldn't get cut while painting on it. Next I looked up the tutorial that I wanted to use. The lady doing the tutorial has a super cool website called step-by-step painting. She has about 4 dozen tutorials on her site and on YouTube. She walks through the painting process effortlessly and I will be using her tutorials again. Her name is Tracie Kiernan. It is also pretty neat how she has all of her tutorials organized by the seasons. I started the sunflower by painting the black seed thing in the middle. Then I painted the petals. I went back over the petals and add highlights and shadows. This parts is becoming easier and easier to do. Then I added some seeds to the middle of the sunflower with white, black, reddish-brown and orange. That was the end of the painting process. I glued some string to the back of the tin so it can be hung on the wall. Since this painting was so easy, next week I am going to work on something other than painting. I might do some paper mache, graffiti or something else that I have never tried before. I will also be posting the horse picture that I finished last week on the slideshow. The sunflower picture will be posted too. I might do something different next week but I also need to paint more for my Etsy page. I am thinking about painting a pig next week and then posting that on Etsy, but I don't know because I need to try more stuff for genius hour. ![]() This week for genius hour I finally finished my horse painting. It turned out pretty good but I wished I had picked another one to do. The tutorial that I watched turned out to be three different parts. So all together the video was about an hour and a half long. I just lost interest about half way through and it took me a while to find the motivation to start on it again. All I had left to do on it was add some highlights and paint the background. I painted the background red, blue, yellow and white. It is pretty much just a splotches everywhere. Another reason it took so long is because it 23 by 17. The painting is huge. I think I am just going to give it away because it I am tired of looking at it. I am going to post the picture of on my gallery. The one that is posted right beside this text looks similar to the one that I painted. I also painted a picture of half of a wolf's face. I turned out pretty good but I used most of my paint and will have to go get more. I started out with painting the canvas black and then I painted the eye. I loved painting this particular piece more than any of my other ones. While painting it I had to go back over again and again. I had to do it this way to make it look furry. I want to paint another wolf in the future and maybe sell them. It took my about five days to complete. But I kept getting side tracked because I painted in my sister room and she can be very distracting. I posted the picture of it on the gallery. This is the link to the tutorial that I watched to teach me how to paint the wolf. I wouldn't not recommend this tutorial because she does not talk about what she is doing or how she is doing it. And she has it sped up so you have to turn down the speed in the settings. I tried to work on my sketchbook over spring break but I didn't get around to it. I did work on the first page of it and started to color it with markers. I didn't reach my goal of working on it everyday but I hope to just work on it when ever I can. ![]() This week for Genius Hour I finished painting my horse. It took me forever to complete and I don't think it turned out that good. The YouTube video that I watched as a tutorial was pretty complicated and was divided into three parts. When I started the project I did not know that it had three parts. The total amount of time combined of the videos was more than an hour and thirty minutes. I finished adding values to the face, ears, and nose. The face was extremely difficult to paint and I did pretty bad on that part. I also added highlights to the nose and mane. The mane was hard to "bring to life" because there are so many different hairs. So, I decided to just do it a much simpler way by painting different colored lines. I will need to back over it and touch up a few more things because I messed up on the background of the picture. For the background, I just put a bunch of little splotches of paint. I like it because I had more fun painting splotches than I did painting the horse. Keep in mind that if you ever want to paint a horse, don’t do it. Painting horse is extremely challenging. The link to the tutorial that I watched is in a previous weekly blog post. A picture of my horse painting will be posted on the slideshow on the about page. I also drew in my sketchbook this week as well. I still need to add color to it and some finishing touches, but I like it. When I first picked up my pencil and started drawing, I was trying to make it perfect. I had no fun and no enjoyment when I had to draw like that. I loosened up and started to draw again. I will finish the first page of my sketchbook over spring break. I hope to draw more in my sketchbook during spring break. I want to make an effort to draw some in it at least once every week for Genius Hour. I want to have the majority of the pages filled by the end of the twelve weeks.
![]() This week for Genius Hour was very different for me. Since we had to go to school on a Wednesday, we did Genius Hour during class. It was nice because I was allowed to work on my project in class along with everyone else. I did not get much finished because I forgot most of my supplies. I also did not have a good enough plan of what I wanted to draw and a layout of how I was going to draw it. I was on my computer more than I was drawing in my sketchbook. I wasted to much time finding what I was going to draw than actually drawing. If this was a real school year, I would need to figure all that out ahead of time. I went shopping this week in Greensboro and bought more art supplies. Since I have been through a couple of weeks, I knew what I needed to buy. I also bought a sketchbook because I never had one before and I thought it would be a cool addition to my Genius Hour project. I hope to draw in it often, even if it is not for Genius Hour. I bought some more paint brushes and canvases. I have not been working on my horse painting even though I should be. I hope I will work on it more next week. I will also post all of the pictures next week and I want the horse painting to be over with. ![]() I started drawing in my new sketchbook during class this week. I think it was a mistake because I did not have a good enough plan on how I was going to do my cover page. I started by drawing a old-timey font in the front cover because it looked cool. I planed on drawing a wolf on one side and a dragon on the other, but the fonts took up way to much space. I cannot go back over to fix it because I did it in pen, so I need to come up with a back-up plan either this week or the next. I hope my sketchbook will become something I enjoy drawing in. This week I painted some rocks and painted more of my horse. I think I will finish the horse by next week. It is taking up a lot of room and it requires a bunch of paint because it is so big. My sister and I got bored this week so we decided to paint rocks. I decided I would do it because it would be good for my genius hour project. We went to our creek and found some round small rocks. We only found 3 because most of them were rough. We used waterproof-paint so when we put them in the yard, the paint would not smear. We decided that the rocks we going to say something inspirational on them. I used yellow, hot pink, white, and bright orange paint. We also wanted to paint them to make people feel good about themselves. Rock painting is a really big deal to some people because they make a living off of it. I watched a couple of professional rock painters to understand their technique and to understand why they chose to paint rocks for a living. The video taught me that you need to paint the basic color first and add your details last. My sister´s rock was painted black and mine was painted white and yellow. Then I chose an inspirational quote to put on my rock. I chose to shine on and my sister chose to be happy. The rocks are made to put in hidden places all around town, parks, schools, and basically anywhere else. They are meant to be encouraging and make people feel better. I have done one of these before in art class last year. The one I did last year was pretty bad and I messed up a lot. My sister and I both needed to start over so we did our best to get the first coat of paint off. My sister said she was done and did not paint anymore on her rock because she said she liked her rock without paint. I painted my second one and it turned out awful because I did not have any paint pens. I think I will only post mine because my sister is not finished.
![]() This week for Genius Hour, I decided to paint a horse. This painting has three parts so it will take me much longer to complete than my previous genius hour projects. I plan on giving it to my sister for her birthday because she loves horses. I went on YouTube and searched for one that would work for me. I also watched a quick tutorial on how to make paintings easier and less time-consuming. I decided on a horse painting by Allison Prior that is for beginners and only requires three colors. I have not been able to go to the store and buy more art supplies. So, I went to a thrift store last week and bought a huge piece of paper for fifty cents! I think it is thick enough to paint on without it tearing. I gathered the materials and watched the video a couple of times because it looked very challenging. I gathered a number two pencil, five paintbrushes, three bottles of paint and some newspaper to keep the paint from ruining the table. Since the paper was so big, I had to clear off the kitchen table to be able to draw the outline the horse. The tutorial on painting tips told me that outlining it first makes the painting much easier. Below is a picture of my horse outline and a link to the YouTube tutorial by Allison Prior. I had to draw out my outline while the lady on the tutorial had a smaller piece of paper so she could print off the outline and trace it. The picture horse picture posted above is what the final product should look like. This painting is more complex than the other pieces I have tried to do before. And since it is a gift, I don´t want it to be bad. I plan on painting this weekend to clear my mind. This week I went to a discount art store in Greensboro. I bought a 12 by 12 canvas and two new paint brushes for this weeks painting. I also had to go to Walmart to buy some paint. The whole trip cost me about 30.00 dollars which isn´t to bad. The painting I decided on was three daises in a jar. This is the first time I have tried to paint on canvas except finger painting I did for my mom in elementary school. I followed a YouTube tutorial for beginners that was only 10 minutes long. I thought that it would only take me about half and hour considering my inexperience. It took me about 3 hours! I kept making mistakes because I need a smaller brush. I also couldn´t find my yellow paint so had to mix blue and green paint. The most time consuming part was getting the correct shape of the daises. Overall I enjoyed painting it and I will definitely be painting more in the future. This is the link to the YouTube tutorial. Below is my painting. I showed my painting my family and I gave it to my mother. She said from now on I need to paint her stuff. My sisters fiance said he wants to set up an Etsy shop and sell my paintings. He already owns a painting business but, it is for painting walls and stuff like that. He made me a deal that if he buys all the supplies I need, posts them for me that he will get 50%. I think it is a great deal because art supplies are expensive and it would be nice to have some extra money.
The only problem with it is that I don´t think anyone will want to buy them. This week I decided to draw a picture of my grandmother. It is a little complex because I have to do some shading. I watched a couple YouTube videos on how to shade. I have practiced a couple times and believe I am ready to start. The method I am going to use is the grid method. I am going to use the picture of her on her eulogy because I think it will work best. First I had to print out the picture. I had to re-print a couple times because I couldn´t get the size right. The materials I used were a number 2 pencil, a piece of paper, eraser, and a ruler. After I printed out the picture I made a 1in. grid on it and my other piece paper. I made sure to do it very lightly so I could erase the lines at the end.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WR-FyUQc6I - How to shade link I did the outline of her face and started to shade it. It took me two days to complete so, a little longer than the last one. I think it turned out really well and would I recommend using the grid method. If I could do anything differently I would have went box by box. At the beginning I didn´t shade by going box by box and at the end it turned out I shaded it wrong. I had to go back and add some more shading to pretty much the whole picture. Another tip I learned from this is to draw very lightly and also shade light to dark. The most time consuming part of the whole drawing was to get the outline of her nose, mouth, and eyes the right shape. The eyes are the hardest because you have to draw two that are very similar. I messed up a couple times and if I drew to dark I could see the lines erase lines. Overall, this turned out pretty dang good in my standards. I hope to keep learning new things about shading. This genius hour I set up my website on Weebly. I came up with a name for my project as well. Setting up my website took a little longer than I expected but overall, it turned out fine. Picking out the format and pictures were the most important to me. I wanted my website to be eye-catching and draw people´s attention. I hope it worked.
I have also scheduled a date to go and buy art supplies that I will need. I hope that I will be able to find them at a good price. I have begun to start watching numerous painting and drawings videos to become inspired and also get helpful tips. I watched a few on beginners paintings and the materials needed. Since I won´t be coming up with ideas by myself I am going to give them credit for their creations at the end of my blogs. I have also decided on what I am going to be doing for next week´s genius hour/week. I will be drawing the first picture posted on the second link. I started yesterday but then started over today because I didn´t like it. I hope I will begin to like the second try better. The first link was just beginners tips on drawing. https://www.creativebloq.com/illustration/sketching-tips-beginners-81516497 www.shihoriobata.com/blog/things-to-draw-when-bored/ This is how my first drawing turned out. I think I did pretty well considering I had to start over three times. I started by picking out the design. Then drew it out in pencil. When I was satisfied with the pencil part I went over it in pen and added some minor details. I plan on doing at least one more piece of art or a craft this weekend since this one worked out well and I have some free-time. |
