![]() This week for Genius I decided to do something a little different. I worked with pastels. Pastels are kinda of like drawing with chalk but it spreads really easy. I have worked with pastels before but I never really actually tried to do a good job when using them. I decided to draw a humming bird with some flowers. I didn't watch a tutorial to do this drawing so that's an improvement. It was definitely more challenging to draw something when you don't have someone showing you how to do it step by step. I didn't even look at a picture while drawing them. I just came up with an idea of what I wanted them to look like and went with it. I don't recommend this method if you are more worried about how it will look when you are finished instead of how relaxing the process can be. You also mess up more than usual but I think you have more fun just experimenting and not stressing about the end result. I started the humming bird picture by printing out the reference photo of the humming bird. I looked at a couple of flowers just for inspiration. A got all of my supplies ready for drawing the picture. I drew the flowers first going up on the right side of the page. I drew them out in pencil first and then went over it in pastel. I colored the red and pink. I learned that pastels blend beautifully and it is pretty easy to add shadows and highlights. After I finished the flowers I moved on to the humming bird. This was the most difficult part of the drawing. It didn't turn out as good as the flowers but I still like. I am also very thankful that I printed out a reference photo. If I didn't have that my picture would have looked a little wonky. I colored the background with green, yellow, blue, and dark green together. I would recommend using pastels because they blend really well.
